The Caravanwise Motorhome policy is based on Highway's specialist vehicle policy and it has certain features that make it a good choice for anyone undertaking the conversion of a panel van or mini bus into a motorhome and it continues to be a good choice after conversion.
Most motorhome policies are very restrictive for DIY builders. They need you to have completed the conversion before you can get cover, they will not insure ex mini buses even if the passenger seats have been removed and they won't cover many imports, especially Japanese vans. The Caravanwise, Highway Specialist vehicle policy is different.
Unlike many policies this one can provide cover for 90 days during conversion. So you can drive the vehicle before the conversion is fully completed.
Vans that are currently designated as a mini bus on the V5 can still be covered provided that the passenger seats are removed. In other words as soon as you start conversion and make it no longer possible for the vehicle to be used as a mini bus then cover can start. Then you have 90 days to get the conversion completed.
Caravanwise welcome Japanese imported vans used for DIY conversion into campervans.
Third party fire and theft cover is available for campervans up to £5,000 in value and the policy is a limited mileage one which means that if you do less miles you pay a lower premium.
One requirement that you need to be aware of and be prepared to do is as follows. If you install gas for cooking or heating then this must either be done and certified by a qualified engineer, or a safety certificate from a qualified gas engineer must be obtained. This makes sense and for most builders would be seen as vital anyway. It is also a requirement that the V5 is re-designated as "Motor Caravan" within the 90 days. This means that your conversion has to be done to a standard sufficient to pass the DVLA requirements for re-designation.
Caravanwise have been in this area of insurance since 1998 and have recently re-entered the motorhome insurance market in the UK. They previously had a significant presence in the DIY motorhome insurance market and have considerable experience and expertise in this important segment of motorhome insurance.
